About Keith
Keith is a modern country township located on the Dukes Highway, with a population of approximately 1,300. The Ngarranjeri people occupied the area around Keith prior to European settlement.
The town is named after Lord Kintore, also known as Lord Keith, who was the Governor of South Australia in 1889 when the town was officially proclaimed. In the 1940s CSIRO scientists discovered that the land around Keith was particularly productive, and over time Keith has had considerable success with cattle studs, grain crops and lucerne. Today Keith is still recognised as the "lucerne capital of Australia" with its distinctive purple paddocks.
Davis Cottage, built in 1894 and one of the earliest buildings in Keith, is owned and operated by the National Trust as a museum.
The Mount Monster Conservation Park, is approximately 10km south of the township and has excellent picnic and barbecue facilities, a number of walks, and is great spot for bird watching. The Nrarkat Conservation Park is north of the township and features a network of trails ranging from in length and difficulty.
